Hospital Welcomes Dr. Kempner: New Chief of Breast Service


New York Downtown Hospital's Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Steven G. Friedman, MD, is pleased to announce the appointment of Robbi Kempner, MD, FACS, as Division Chief of the Breast Service.

In making the announcement, Dr. Friedman said, “With the increasing presence of women in Lower Manhattan, it is imperative that we have a recognized expert directing the Hospital's Breast Service. Dr. Kempner has performed this function at several New York City-based institutions and most recently served as the Assistant Director of Breast Surgery at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut. Dr. Kempner will bring much needed care to the women of our community.”

Dr. Kempner is a renowned expert in the field of breast surgery and will be a central figure in the Hospital's Wellness & Prevention Center, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010. Dr. Kempner specializes in surgery of the breast with particular expertise in image-guided biopsy techniques and oncologic breast surgery.

Dr. Kempner graduated from Tel Aviv University and received her medical degree from New York Medical College. She completed a residency in Surgery at Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York City and a fellowship in Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Kempner is board certified in General Surgery and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Kempner's new colleagues welcomed her to New York Downtown Hospital:

Allan Klapper, MD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said, “As a recognized leader in breast health, Dr. Kempner will provide the highest level of care for women in the Downtown community. She will be a vital component of the women's healthcare team at New York Downtown Hospital.”

Gerald D. Ginsberg, MD, Chief of Plastic Surgery, said, “I am delighted that Dr. Kempner is joining New York Downtown Hospital to carry on our great tradition of excellence in breast surgery. Dr. Kempner is very aware of the contribution plastic surgery can make to a woman's recovery from breast surgery. I am pleased to bring the art of breast reconstruction to the New York Downtown Hospital Breast Service and look forward to Dr. Kempner's leadership.”

Pauline Hecht, MD, Associate Chief of the Department of Surgery, has served as Director of the Breast Clinic since 1991. Dr. Hecht observed, “The demand for breast specialists due to advanced imaging technologies has intensified. We welcome the arrival of Dr. Kempner as a member of the Hospital team dedicated to the diagnosis and care of breast cancer patients.”

Warren Licht, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, added, “Dr. Kempner represents yet another level of expertise that rounds out the excellent composition of the New York Downtown Hospital medical staff.”
