Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology(212)312-5880 Department Offices The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at New York Downtown Hospital has brought together a group of exceptionally skilled physicians to serve the needs of women living and working in Lower Manhattan and to offer graduate medical students one of the finest residency programs in the city. The Department of OB/GYN is led by Allan Klapper, M.D. Dr. Klapper is Board Certified in OB/GYN and is a sub-specialist in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. He is a recognized leader in the field of OB/GYN, female urinary incontinence, interstitial cystitis, pelvic support disorders as well as laparoscopic and minimally invasive treatment of gynecological disorders. Dr. Klapper received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and completed his residency at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Klapper is the founder of the Center for Female Continence and Pelvic Health at New York Downtown Hospital, and is currently the Center's Medical Director. This comprehensive Center specializes in the treatment of female health disorders such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, interstitial cystitis (bladder pain, etc.), pelvic organ prolapse (bladder, uterus, vagina), in addition to laparoscopic and minimally invasive treatments of disorders such as fibroids and endometriosis. Each year, the Department of OB/GYN oversees approximately 10,000 outpatient visits, 2,600 births, and more than 5,000 prenatal diagnostic tests and 800 gynecological surgeries. The Department of OB/GYN takes pride in delivering expert, personalized care in an environment where patient dignity and compassion are emphasized. Patients may choose to see OB/GYN doctors in either the modern Outpatient Center on the Fifth Floor of the Hospital or at one of the Hospital's satellite offices in Lower Manhattan. New mothers deliver in the Hospital's beautifully renovated, state-of-the-art Maternity Center, which is equipped with attractive, family-oriented suites for labor and delivery. Women needing same-day surgical procedures are treated in the Hospital's new Ambulatory Surgery Center. The OB/GYN Residency Training Program at New York Downtown Hospital provides resident staff with an outstanding academic environment in a dynamic urban community hospital setting. Residents who join the program receive a broad education spanning women's healthcare, obstetrics, gynecology, and the sub-specialties. A highly qualified faculty, renowned for its clinical care and teaching excellence, supervises the house staff.
