Who can benefit from Cardiac Rehabilitation?

New York Downtown Hospital Provides a Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program for people with a history of heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, or stable angina pectoris, if you have had a heart attack, angioplasty or heart surgery, or if you have coronary artery disease, you can be considered as a candidate for the program. If you have been told that you are at risk for developing coronary disease, you may also be considered for the cardiac rehabilitation program at New York Downtown Hospital.

What happens in Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Patients enrolled in the cardiac rehabilitation program typically visit the Medical Diagnostics Unit three times per week for three months [36 sessions]. Rehabilitation sessions consist of supervised exercise therapy, nutritional guidance and education and support for risk factor modification.

Once you are enrolled in the program, cardiologists and cardiac nurse specialists will work with you and your referring physician to develop a medically monitored exercise regimen with the following objectives for you.

- To increase your exercise capacity
- To decrease the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in your blood through exercise
- To help strengthen your muscles to increase their efficiency
- To help you feel less tired, tense, anxious, or depressed
- To enhance efficient coordination of care of illness due to coronary disease inconjunction with your referring physician.

What are the facilities like?

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program's facilities were designed for ease of access and with patient comfort in mind. As an enrolled patient, you will have access to those necessities which you need to fit rehabilitation sessions into a daily regimen, ever after you have return to work; these include a full changing area, lockers, showers, and related amenities. Our state-of-the-art exercise equipment includes treadmills, stationery bicycles, arm ergonetry, rowing machines, Stairmasters, and all related equipment for the monitoring of blood pressure, EKG, and other physical signs.

How do I get to the Cardiac rehabilitation Unit?

Our program is housed on the 8th floor of New York Downtown Hospital. We are conveniently located in lower Manhattan within walking distance of multiple subway, bus and ferry lines. If you live or work Downtown, you will like to find that we are a short walk from your home or office.

Most importantly, our location within the walls of a full service hospital ensures that you have direct access to the finest medical treatment available, should additional services become necessary. And, our partnership with New York Downtown Hospital guarantees the continuity of care and the support of two world-renowned academic medical centers.

How do I enroll in the program and pay for treatment?

You can enroll in the cardiac rehabilitation program or have your physician enroll you by calling our Medical Diagnostics Unit at (646) 588-2600
. Once you are enrolled, it is expected that you will continue to be cared for by your private physician.

Many insurance and managed care plans provide at least some coverage or cardiac rehabilitation services, and our program accepts most insurance and managed care plan as well as Medicare. Regardless of your insurance type, we strongly encourage you to contact your plan prior to entering the program to establish exactly which services are covered by our policy and to what financial extent.
