Jeffrey Menkes, President and CEO, Announces Joint Commission Accreditation
I am extremely proud to report that the Joint Commission survey has concluded and that New York Downtown Hospital was awarded a full accreditation. Our success was truly a team effort. From those who provide medical care to those who maintain our facility, each member of the Hospital team collaborated to ensure this well-deserved achievement. Both the physician and nurse surveyors were particularly impressed with the way Downtown Hospital responds to the cultural diversity of our patient population, especially with the Chinese population; and our ability to speak their language and be culturally sensitive. But the highest compliment which they shared with us at the exit conference was that, should they personally need medical care, they would come to our Hospital.
The Joint Commission is the nation’s principal health care accrediting agency, evaluating and certifying more than 15,000 hospitals, nursing homes and health care programs in the United States. To earn and to maintain The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™, a hospital must undergo an unannounced, on-site inspection by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years. The surveyors addressed key areas which included patient rights, patient treatment, environment of care, medication management, and infection control. Their focus was not only on our ability to provide safe care, but on our actual performance, using a survey methodology which tracks the patient’s experience from admission to discharge. If an organization consistently does the right things and does them well, there is a strong likelihood that its patients will experience good outcomes.
On behalf of the Trustees and Senior Management, I want to congratulate all of you for representing the Hospital in a very positive way. You were magnificent. You exhibited a high level of competence in providing superior medical care for all the people of Lower Manhattan.
