CLINICAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
We
believe that scholarly activity is an integral part of each internal medicine
resident’s clinical training. Physicians must be able to access, critique and
synthesize medical data and apply it to patient care, and ask appropriate
questions and generate and test hypotheses based on their own experiences. We have
developed this exciting program to assist and stimulate our residents in engaging in these
scholarly activities.
The
Clinical Scholar program is a research track within our program that offers
selected residents additional time for research and scholarly experiences.
Selected residents will receive a special schedule with one to two additional
elective blocks of research early during the third year and the opportunity to
audit courses on Clinical Investigation at the Cornell
Weill Medical College. The selected residents
are required to complete a written project suitable for publication or
presentation. Residents can use a variety of study designs for their written
projects including, but not limited to, cohort, case series, meta-analysis or
clinical trial. A medical education, medical history, quality improvement, or
cost-effectiveness study may also be an appropriate project. Furthermore,
these selected residents will receive financial support to attend a local or
national meeting and present their work. Residents who successfully
complete the program will be awarded a special certificate upon graduation.
Applications
for the program will be accepted in March for the following academic year.
Candidates must submit a research proposal, curriculum vitae, and a letter of
recommendation from their research mentor. Applications are reviewed by a
committee and selected in May.
