New York Downtown Hospital operates the only 24-hour Emergency Department in Lower Manhattan.
After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, when the Department treated over 1,500 victims--the largest disaster response in American history--a community-wide fundraising campaign was launched to construct a new, state-of-the-art facility.
The new Emergency Center at New York Downtown Hospital officially opened in September 2006. As the only emergency facility in Lower Manhattan, this Center is vital to the community's millions of residents, workers, and tourists.
The new facility includes the largest decontamination unit in the city. Every patient area has been upgraded, including those for women, children, asthma and chest pain patients. The emergency department is fully equipped to respond to both individual and community-wide emergencies.
Downtown Hospital is a 911 receiving Hospital and a Community Trauma Center. As a designated Stroke Center, we also specialize in the rapid and comprehensive care of patients with symptoms of stroke. Additionally, the Emergency Center has X-Ray and CT Scanning facilities within the department to expedite diagnosis and treatment.
Because of the Downtown community's cultural diversity, Downtown Hospital has Chinese and Spanish translators available 24 hours a day. Many of our staff are bilingual. For patients who speak other languages, we have immediate access to language banks and 24-hour translation services.
Our Emergency Department operates a Prompt Care section dedicated to minor medical and surgical emergencies. The area is staffed by Certified Physician Assistants who are supervised by our Attending Physician Staff. Our goal is a start-to-finish time of sixty minutes.
Dating back to the late 1800s, ambulance service of Downtown Hospital has the distinction of providing the longest, continuously running ambulance service in New York City.
We provide twenty-four hour coverage to Lower Manhattan in conjunction with FDNY EMS. Their dispatch is controlled by the NYC 911 system.
Downtown Hospital is a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and an affiliate of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. This gives our patients immediate access to one of the premier hospitals in New York, and to the most sophisticated subspecialty and tertiary care in the country.
The Emergency Center of Downtown Hospital will continue to evolve along with our growing, richly diverse community. We will continue to be the leader in community CPR training, disaster planning, and the coordination of corporate medical services throughout the Downtown area.
