Dr. Merola is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a charter member of the American Board of Spine Surgery. He is a member of many academic societies and has been honored by the American Orthopaedic Association for best scientific poster exhibit. He has also received both the Russell S. Hibbs Award and the John H. Moe Award for clinical excellence in spinal reconstructive surgery from the Scoliosis Research Society, and the Bernard Freundilch Mercer Rang Paper Competition Award from the Brooklyn Orthopaedic Society. A noted writer and lecturer, Dr. Merola is the author of a number of textbooks and has had articles published in prestigious medical journals, including Spine and Journal of Spinal Cord Medicineand the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. Merola earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at State University of New York (SUNY) Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn and a fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of Colorado Health Science Center.
Dr. Merola specializes in reconstructive spinal surgery, disc surgery and scoliosis.
